Exhibition: Amy Keefer
December 12, 6-9pm
She works Flexible now is delighted to present the work of East bay area artist Amy Keefer in her solo show debut, ‘On being Blue’. Using the traditional forms of crochet and lace making Keefer is a champion for a slow and repetitive process. Repetition is a time-honored pedagogical tool, an essential part of storytelling, and an oft-used strategy for successful political oration. By reiterating a central line of a campaign speech, a convincing vision of a person or a society can be built. By repeating a process with one's hands, one can gain physical knowledge-- muscle memory that improves over time. Repetition is not only a means of teaching what is already known, but also a means of construction, of learning through doing; according to Keefer, "that's how things exist and grow-- by repeating their days and their portraits of themselves. Every repetition is different."
Crochet always involves crunching numbers, but for Amy Keefer, each work is an account in every sense of the word: it is a narrative rendering of a personal politics, and a strict reckoning of the numbers that construct it. Each piece is painstakingly crafted using politically significant statistics as a starting point and as a pattern for growth. The work manifests a delicate play between precision and chance, between criticality and idealism. Keefer processes statistical information through her hands, making it slow and tactile for her, and immediate
and visible for viewers.
